Dressing for success is the missing link between you and your goals

Sophia Lorimer

How it all began

Growing up I was always into fashion and it was always my passion however I never knew I could make it into a business. I didn't see people like me owning a business where I live in West Sussex. My family was the only black family in the area. I believed that only "white" people owned business and that's just the way it is.

Fast forward to today, I am a dynamic presenter, influential speaker, and the visionary founder of Fine-Tuned Wardrobe. I have been making waves in the world of sustainable styling and female empowerment. My award-winning business, Fine-Tuned Wardrobe, is committed to empowering women to embrace their unique style and regain confidence in all aspects of their lives while promoting sustainability in fashion.

As a Sustainable Stylist, my approach sets me apart from conventional fashion stylists. Rather than advocating mindless consumerism and fast fashion, I  collaborate with my clients to refresh and enhance their existing wardrobes, utilizing cherished garments that evoke confidence and positive self-esteem. I firmly believe that sustainable and slow fashion can be beautifully incorporated into everyone's wardrobe without compromising on style.

Another element that sets me apart is I help my clients go on to help less fortunate women in the community.

I do this by decluttering their wardrobes and anything that's not for them. I help them sell it in pop-up shops or donate it to women shelters and the homeless.

What we wear is an expression of our identity, and I am passionate about helping ALL women embrace their individuality through their clothing choices.

My goal is to inspire corporate mums and leaders to rediscover their style sustainably, ultimately empowering them to feel confident and comfortable in their own skin.

How Fine-tuned wardrobe came about

I had my daughter and I assumed everything would be perfect like everyone shows new mums to be. But that was not the case for me. I suffered in silence and battled with postnatal depression, I lost my confidence, I couldn't recognise myself in the mirror, I hated myself, and couldn't dress this new body I was left with.

I was at rock bottom until I spoke out about what was really going on. I got all the help and support I needed and soon enough I started to feel better.  When I did A LOT of work, I thought there must be other women that feel this way, I want to help them get comfortable in their skin.

The seed was planted and I just needed to find a way of making it a reality. I had no business knowledge, none of my peers owned a business but I was like a dog with a bone. I was determined to help women not go through what I went through.

Fine-tuned wardrobe was born in November and we then went into lockdown the following March but that was not going to stop me either so I took my business online for the first year or so.

One of my core pillars is Sustainability and here's why

Sustainable styling is so important to me because it's the gateway to so much not only the fundamental reason of minimizing the negative impacts on the environment and society. It also is the gateway for women dressing in what they love with confidence. When we were young we oozed creativity but as we get older we lose that. By being more sustainable in your style you are giving yourself that chance again to get creative with what you have and wear what you love.

My 5 tips to embrace a more sustainable style!

1. Dress in what you love and what empowers you even if it goes against the grain

2. Get to know your style and your body shape so you can shop for it

3. Wear colors and fabrics  that empower you and make you feel confident

4. Get organised and get rid of clothes that no longer fit you physically or fit into your lifestyle as it is now. We call this the "Sad Pile"

5. Vote with your money and shop with brands that align with your personal values.

If I had a magic wand this is what I would do differently if I started again

Get help In the areas that are out of my areas of genius. Having freebies or paying hardly anything will come back and bite you in the bum.

Believe me, I am speaking from experience. Starting a new business can be hard enough financially, let alone adding on more costs but investing in your

business from the get-go will save you time, money, and a lot of stress in the long run. Also, I would invest in my personal growth much sooner!

Your business will only grow if you do so and personal growth is so important.

I would love to leave you with this

The reason why my business is called " Fine-tuned wardrobe " is because it's bigger than me. I have HUGE dreams and goals for my business.

I want it to be a household name! That is nationwide not for my ego but to support as many women as possible using my business model from the fortunate that can afford services like mine to those women that are less fortunate.

Ultimately leaving no stone unturned in showing all black girls like me that ANYTHING is possible for us too! We just need to work for it and demand our seat at the table. I have 34 nieces and nephews as well as a daughter of my own. I believe that by them seeing me do this it's already letting them know we don't ever have to settle, we just need to grab our big goals with both hands and go for it.

You can support my mission by using my services and telling everyone about the work I do.
